To Dance on the Hedgerow

By Joshua Lanning

There really is no point of a maze other than entrapment. Unless you are that person who can dance on the hedgerow. I constantly look up to those people who make a joke of the maze. Who flip it upside down  and inside out. Usually their hands are less full. How is it they carry less weight?

To some, every corner is an obstacle. And you are awaiting a dead-end. To those who dance on the hedge row, there is no such thing as a dead end, rather an opportunity to adventure further.

The maze isn’t intimidating in its complexity but more in the notion that you may have to navigate it alone. If you are surrounded by good company, you aren’t in a maze, just on a journey. You’re not lost or trapped but in an adventure with endless options.

Nothing matters other than putting one foot in front of the other...

I find it fascinating that the middle of the maze tends to be the most elaborate and decorative. It’s the opposite of escape. It’s the embrace of the journey. Resting in the middle of it with perspective. In front of you and behind you are multiple doors that you could walk through. Some view those doors as opportunities to get lost but those who dance on the hedgerow know that nothing matters other than putting one foot in front of the other and journeying forward, awaiting to meet the companions along the way.

Most people never realize that the Maze isn’t life. It’s what fills your hands that is life. It’s heavy and hearty. But you can drop a relic at anytime, the hard memory, the withered relationship, the pride of many likes and the pain of gaining more, making the journey more light. So light, you too can climb and dance on the hedgerow.
